I am convinced that the best housewarming gift is a welcome mat. A person could do with 2 to 5 of them depending on their housing situation, so it is unlikely that a welcome mat would be an unwelcoming gift.
But I am especially convinced that writing Psalm 121:8 on the underside of the welcome mat, and praying that verse over the mat, is an important gesture from a parent when you are sending your grown child out on their own. Giving them the gift of a blessed threshold.
I’ve only done it once so far, but I expect to do it with all my children. There is no prayer more important than this when I sit at home with not-all-my-people under my roof now: that the Lord would bless the going out and coming in of my not-here child. I don’t need to leave the porch light on and the front door unlocked for him anymore, because he isn’t coming home here at night. But my Father is watching him: He will be his help, He will not let his foot be moved; He will surely keep him without slumbering; He will keep him from evil and preserve his life. That He would keep my son’s going out and coming in now and forevermore is the deepest prayer of my heart.
And yes, that’s the verse I want beneath my son’s feet whenever he crosses the threshold of his house.
